Club Spotlight: Madison Retriever Club (MRC)

An event of this magnitude doesn’t just come together on its own—it requires an incredible venue and a mountain of local dedication. The Master Amateur Invitational community owes a massive thank you to our host for the 2026 event, the Madison Retriever Club (MRC).

Decades of Field Excellence

Founded in the 1950s, the Madison Retriever Club has been a cornerstone of the Midwestern retriever community for over 70 years. From the beginning, their mission has been dedicated to developing the natural working abilities of retrievers, supporting amateur handlers, and promoting the highest standards of AKC hunt tests and field trials.

Over the decades, MRC has built a stellar reputation for putting on seamless, highly competitive events, making them the perfect choice to anchor this year’s Invitational.

World-Class Technical Grounds

What makes MRC truly special is their incredible foresight in developing permanent, dedicated training and trialing properties right here in Dane County. They aren't just utilizing public spaces; they have spent years sculpting world-class technical grounds specifically designed to test elite-level marking and blind manners.

Teams this week will be tested on MRC’s premier local properties:

• The Stoughton Property (Town of Dunkirk): Located right on Hauge Road, this spectacular piece of land features rolling terrain and custom-designed, highly technical swimming ponds engineered to challenge a dog's entry, exit, and line-holding capabilities.

• The Gallagher Property: Situated right between Stoughton and Oregon, WI, on Gallagher Lane, offering fantastic land setups and diverse cover that will truly test a dog’s memory and perseverance.

• The Hook Lake Clubhouse: Located nearby in Oregon, WI, serving as the club’s historical anchor.

A Heartfelt Thank You to the Volunteers

Beyond the dirt and water, a club is only as strong as its membership. Dozens of MRC members have spent months mowing lines, preparing technical ponds, coordinating equipment, and organizing the logistical heavy lifting required to host hundreds of the best amateur teams in the country.

When you see an MRC member in a worker vest this week, please take a moment to throw them a hand and say thank you. Their passion for the sport is the reason we have such a spectacular stage to play on this week.

Stoughton, Wisconsin, is a charming city on the Yahara River with a rich history and a few very unique claims to fame. If you are building out background content for your blog, these are the standout facts that define the town:

1. Deep Norwegian Heritage & "Syttende Mai"

Stoughton is widely recognized for its deep Scandinavian roots. Following a massive wave of Norwegian immigration between 1865 and the early 1900s, the city has passionately preserved its cultural identity.

• Syttende Mai Festival: Every May, the city hosts one of the largest Syttende Mai (Norwegian Constitution Day) celebrations in North America, drawing thousands of visitors for parades, authentic food, Norwegian crafts like rosemaling, and performances by the famous Stoughton High School Norwegian Dancers.

2. The Birthplace of the "Coffee Break"

Stoughton proudly claims to be the birthplace of the modern coffee break. In the late 19th century, Norwegian immigrant women took seasonal jobs at the local tobacco warehouses. Because they lived so close to the warehouses, they agreed to work on the condition that they could return home every morning and afternoon to tend to household chores, check on their children, and—naturally—drink a fresh cup of coffee. The city still celebrates this unique history every summer with the Stoughton Coffee Break Festival.

3. The Historic Stoughton Opera House

Known as the "crown jewel" of the city, the Stoughton Opera House opened in 1901 and is one of the few remaining functional second-story theaters in the Midwest. Meticulously restored to its original Victorian grandeur in the 1990s, it is famous for its sublime acoustics and hosts a packed seasonal lineup of national and regional musical and theatrical acts.

4. Historic Architecture & Tobacco History

During the late 1800s, Stoughton was an economic powerhouse in Dane County, driven by the T.G. Mandt Wagon Company and a booming tobacco industry that featured 17 massive tobacco warehouses. Today, that legacy lives on through the town's beautifully preserved architecture. Stoughton boasts four distinct historic districts filled with stunning Victorian, Queen Anne, and Italianate-style homes and commercial storefronts.

5. Gateway to Lake Kegonsa

For outdoor enthusiasts, the city sits just minutes south of Lake Kegonsa State Park, making it a popular hub for boating, hiking, and excellent fishing (especially for walleye and bass). The Yahara River also cuts right through the downtown area, offering popular local kayaking and canoeing trails.
